Earlier last year, I got word that Parfums de Marly Beverly Hills would be the second boutique in the United States. That was all I needed to know. A trip to the West Coast was in order. With French in my blood (mother’s side) and a lifelong equestrian, Parfums de Marly has held a spot in my olfactory heart. Established in 2009 by Julien Sprecher, the house takes inspiration from “Château de Marly”, the residence of King Louis XV, whose Royal Court became known as “la cour parfumée” – ‘The Perfumed Court’. The logo bears the image of the chateau, the year of the restoration, 1743. and two stallions representing the elegance and beauty of the brand. The house, drawing inspiration from the rich equestrian culture of France celebrates this connection in every fragrance which is named after different horse breeds.

The adage from the 1940 Thomas Wolfe novel, states, “You can never go home again.” Wrong. You can! Beverly Hills, CA., my hometown, is well known for its celebrities and high-end luxury retail stores, of which the fragrance retail sector is well represented. And contrary to popular belief, you can walk in LA or at least Beverly Hills. Just a short distance from one another are Henry Jacques, Beverly Hills Perfumery, Diptyque North Beverly, Sephora, Creed Boutique Beverly Hills, department stores Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue (moving this Spring into the departed Barney’s location), and as of August 2023, a new Parfums de Marly Beverly Hills Boutique. Situated on chic Brighton Way (steps away from prestigious Rodeo Drive), which gives off an intimate feel like Bond Street in London, the gorgeous two-story, 175-square-meter boutique, fashioned in the brand’s new retail image (similar to their London and Dubai boutiques) has that elegant style and colors designed by Hubert de Malherbe. Part present-day Parisian penthouse crossed with an 18th-century French chateau. A slice of Parisian elegance.

It took until early December before I was able to arrange a trip to the Left Coast. I reached out to Yvan Jacqueline, who is the President-Americas Fine Fragrance Distribution/ Parfums de Marly- Initio Parfums Privés, and he made an introduction for me to meet up with Anoush Grigorian, Store Director of the Beverly Hills boutique. Arriving Saturday, December 16th, 2023 right before Christmas, I was welcomed into the house’s new vision of the world of French luxury.

Once you have entered the focus is on the central Fragrant Table with over thirty scents inviting exploration into the Houses’ noble, and indomitable olfactory style. You are free to engage the scents undisturbed if you like or ask the staff for suggestions. If you want to engage further there are a few alternative areas on the main floor to sit to have a consultation and have your fragrant selections evaluated in a relaxed manner. For those who seek privacy, there is a dedicated private room in the back just for that.
Parfums De Marly Beverly Hills Olfactorium Station
The Olfactorium Station is a recent development that offers a semi-bespoke experience conceived around symbolic ingredients such as the Damascene rose and precious woods where one can partake in the artisanship of the House. It’s a great way to smell the brand’s perfumes sans the packaging or labels.
Parfums de Marly Beverly Hills Second Floor Champagne Bar
A well-appointed staircase leads up to the second floor to a very open and tastefully appointed sunlit room that is set up like a salon. The space is dedicated to hosting private events and masterclasses. On Saturday, Anoush was leading an engaging masterclass with a room full of knowledgeable fragrant lovers. I was fortunate to observe the full extent of the experience. Upon the conclusion, I spent a few moments in a passionate discussion of the brand with a few of the attendees. A champagne bar set up discreetly in the back is a classy touch.

Before departing I had a few questions for Anoush. I inquired how often these events take place and how many can be hosted. Anoush stated that during the holiday season, they have scheduled one a week but generally it would be about once a month after that. How many can the room accommodate? The space is designed to host ten to twenty fragrant lovers comfortably. I asked about the breakdown of the store’s demographics. She told me that as of now, it’s about 30 percent tourists and 70 percent locals. What scents are the most popular? While the boutique has only been open a little less than six months some favorites have emerged.
